Consequently, these encounters feel more slot king138 like simple puzzles than stealth sequences, but the fact they conclude with you bringing down an armoured behemoth at least twice the size of Blazkowicz is consistently satisfying. He’ll often reflect on the situation and how it reminds him of situations from his past; there are a few opportunities throughout the game to learn a bit about the background of the main antagonists, too. In the original Wolfenstein 3-D games, he was mute, aside from a gleeful “Yeah! In Return to Castle Wolfenstein, he only had a few lines in cutscenes. In Wolfenstein 2009, he had a few action movie quips, but not a lot to say.

Wolfenstein The Old Blood

The objective of the game is to traverse all the levels of the secret Berlin bunker where Hitler is holding secret meetings with his senior staff. The player must retrieve a bomb that the operatives have placed inside the bunker and place it outside the door of the room where Hitler is holding his meeting, a scenario bearing a passing resemblance to the July 20 Plot. Not to mention Helga von Schabbs, who is RTCW‘s Helga von Bulow, but not as fat. For a game that mainly revolves around traversing narrow corridors, mountains and rivers play pivotal roles.

A famously cruel underling of Deathshead who has been running some kind of excavation in the surrounding villages. Digging up treasures and relics belonging to a king from ancient, Germanic times. The Wolfenstein installments have always been known as the video game equivalent of an outlandish, cheesy, B-grade war/zombie movie. An FPS version of, say, a pulpy grindhouse pic made by Robert Rodriguez or Quentin Tarantino. The Old Blood doesn’t bring anything new to that barren wasteland.

Or the frenetic action, the nonstop sequences of more and more Nazis to kill? Certainly yes to all of these, but each game has always had something else behind it. The New Order was a small, human struggle against an overwhelmingly powerful foe, and Wolfenstein before it was about killing interdimensional foes who had allied themselves with the Third Reich, or something.

If that’s (still) your poison, you can’t go far wrong with this.

The first two games in the series, Castle Wolfenstein and Beyond Castle Wolfenstein, focused on stealth-based gameplay from a top-down perspective. Beginning with id Software’s Wolfenstein 3D, they shifted to, and helped popularize, the first-person shooter genre. After ZeniMax Media acquired id Software, including the Wolfenstein franchise, developer MachineGames became the series’ primary developer. The Old Blood seems to experience less severe graphical issues than The New Order, which many will attest to as having extremely troubling frame-rate drops and other visual bugs, particularly on ATI graphics cards. This may be do to the compressed nature of the levels, which tend to feature fewer colossal skyboxes and gigantic set pieces than The New Order.

They can also turn into zombies, which means the other nazis will shoot them and in turn be killed by the final boss. Once they’re all dead, it will usually be quiet for a while so you can do the tactic for Phase 1 again. After enough nazis spawn and you deal enough damage to the final boss, the final phase will begin. Well, in this reimagined alternate WWII of 1946, the Nazis are really giving the Allies a thumping, and SS forces are on the verge of hitting the world upside the head with a great big “Achtung! ” A lot of that is due to the Germans’ use of unstoppable killing machines developed by the obviously named General Deathshead. So what BJ must do is impersonate a Nazi officer, slip into Castle Wolfenstein, find a file of intel on the Germans’ superior weapons-grade tech, and then slip back out to give the Americans a much needed shot in the arm.

While Blazkowicz can think only of escape, Wesley seems resigned. For decades the Wolfenstein franchise had been a collaborative effort. Numerous developers each adding to Blazkowizc’s adventures and making nods at the canon established by their predecessors. With The Old Blood, Machine Games rather arrogantly annexes the franchise.

Unless you’re a Nazi, in which case you should get some help. Climactic skirmishes and boss battles are actually exciting. A fight through a city bath-house is tough, interesting and memorable. And while many of the sequences are hoary old clichés – a cable-car battle, a fight through Nazi infested caves, three way battles between Nazis, zombies and you – MachineGames has found ways to make them tense and enjoyable. It might be the gaming equivalent of a classic rock radio station but, man, do those old hits sound good. Gurney’s poetry is far quieter and more reflective than the that with which Blazkowicz opened the game.

The first chapter of the DLC, titled Rudi Jäger and the Den of Wolves, will throw players into the boots of U.S. Soldier William “B.J.” Blazkowicz as he attempts to gain access to, and enter Castle Wolfenstein in an attempt to find Deathshead’s compound. This expedition for information will continue into the second chapter, The Dark Secrets of Helga Von Schabbs, as Blazkowicz tracks down a Nazi archeologist in Wulfburg, who is threatening to release a mysteriously dark and ancient power into the world. More broadly speaking, MachineGames seem to have had more fun with the non-combat interactions in The Old Blood. Exploration yields loads of hidden content, with BJ fiddling with ornaments, mouthing off about details in his surroundings or having Nazi guards salute him while he’s incognito. There’s a lot more schlocky incidental dialogue to be overheard too, with my personal favourite being an eye-rolling conversation in which one Nazi stubbornly corrects the grammar of another.

Fail to do that, and you’ll have a whole lot more to deal with. Although most of the time, if truth be told, I just blasted my way through levels in typical Wolfenstein style – pretty much the same as I did in the New Order. One of the reasons I was really looking forward to The Old Blood was the story, which is clearly a deliberate throwback to my previous favourite game in the Wolfenstein series, Xatrix’s Return To Castle Wolfenstein. It’s supposed to be B-movie like in style yet isn’t, instead using The New Order’s trick of telling everything in a straight, serious way no matter how ridiculous things get. It’s all predictable and full of new, disposable characters that we only get ten seconds with before they get horribly murdered or something. I wanted more B-movie stuff, more nods to previous games, or at least some plot twists I couldn’t have seen a mile off.

The downside of the game’s short length is that none of the characters really have time to get developed, leaving them feeling like hollow set-pieces. As a result, many events like this which might otherwise be heart-breaking are stifled by your inability to properly connect with the participants. One good example is a choice near the end of the game which forces you to pick one of two characters to save. Unfortunately you only get to know them for less than ten minutes beforehand, with most of their background delivered through collectible information around the environment. As such, the decision feels somewhat contrived and worse, meaningless.

When Blazkowicz reaches Wesley, now with a mouthful of broken teeth and blackened eye, he cannot save him. Elsewhere, the language anachronistic (‘soft drink’ is hardly an 1940s phrase). Still, by combining a lost landscape with the loss of father damaged by World War One, the piece speaks powerfully to a nostalgic desire for return to a home and a family undamaged by war. Even while there is pain in these memories, such as Wesley’s broken leg, it is bound up inextricably with pleasure. Of course, we (and Wesley) know his return to the Welsh mountains is impossible.

It’s still a game in which it feels really nice to murder people with guns. The add-on is a prequel to The New Order and a nod to the fans of the series. The game takes place in 1946, when the Nazis were at the edge of winning World War II.
